Trat is Thailand’s easternmost province - small, quiet and yet charming. It borders on Cambodia, with the Khao Banthat mountain range, also known as the Cardamon Mountains, forming a natural frontier. You will be mesmerized by the beautiful almond trees that line the streets of Trat town, the provincial capital. Trat town allures with its cute teakwood homes and friendly people. European-style buildings and Catholic churches are reminiscent of colonial times.
Geographical situation
Trat is connected to Bangkok by Sukhumvit Road, one of Thailand’s major arteries. The road passes through Chanthaburi, Rayong and Chonburi. Trat’s airport is located near the capital. The province is also the main center for travelers heading to the islands of Chang, Mak and Kood.
Beaches
Even though there are some small beaches in Trat town, tourists mainly go to Koh Chang to sunbathe and snorkel. The province’s main beaches are Hat Sai Si Ngoen (also known as Silver Sand Beach), Hat Thap Thim, Hat Ban Chuen and Hat Sai Kaew.
Sightseeing
Wat Plai Khlong is the epitome of tranquility. This is a beautiful compound of several wooden buildings dating to the 17th century. The temple’s museum houses an interesting collection of Chinese and European porcelain.
Entertainment and activities
Snorkeling and diving are the main entertainment to be encountered in Trat town. Alternatively, you can rent a boat and sail to the neighboring islands.
Infrastructure
Trat town is famous for its markets: Sukhumvit, the new one, and Tat Mai, the old one. However, the most spectacular and impressive is the night market, which opens as dusk falls.
Souvenirs
Yellow oil, which is produced only in Trat, is believed to have magical healing properties that can cure almost any disease. Another thing characteristic of the region is Ngop Nam Chiao, a native sun hat woven from palm leaves, which is very popular among tourists.
